Day 189 and snakeskin is back, 95%

Day 189 and snakeskin is back after a bit of a hiatus. I got this new cuff on Monday at a store in the Concordia metro, 95%

Today, just before Art History, Cheryl Donison, a colleague at Vanier told me that a student of hers asked her who she shared an office with. The student replied, “Dayna? Who is Dayna? Is she the woman who always wears animal print?” Cheryl told her that I am a performer and that this is a year-long project to which the student replied, “Aaaaahh,” as though now, it all made sense. According to Cheryl, the student was then “totally fascinated.”

Thanks for the report, Cheryl:)

Day 188 and it’s all about tilted angles, 95%

Day 188 and it’s all about tilted angles. I gave the last Intro to Film lecture at Vanier, as the final exam will be next week. Hint: there will be a question on tilted angles, which director used them in what film we looked at this semester, and why. 95%

Today I was very much aware of performing proximity, or rather trying not to do it pointedly or intentionally. There were a few students at Vanier who I happened to walk behind on my way from the metro to school, both wearing leopard print pants or leggings. I tried to keep my distance for fear of embarrassing them. However, I don’t have this consideration off campus.

Dark Horse Cougar AND Performance Art Reference

I watched Todd Solondz’s Dark Horse (2011) last night, and there were both cougar and performance art references- perfect for my interests and research:

Cougar in Dark Horse

Performance Art in Dark Horse

I uploaded these clips to YouTube because I was having trouble with the VideoJS Pro WordPress plugin; no sound with H.264 encoded movs, and no image with mp4s when hosted and posted from my server. I’ve had success with this plugin for other videos on this site using H.264, however, neither of those have sound.

Lily channels Willow on How I Met Your Mother

SPOILER ALERTS (for Kirk, see comments)
Here is arms crossed Lily on How I Met Your Mother. She is mad because while trying to ‘help’ Robin with her plan to sleep with Barney again, Lily suggests that Robin make out with a woman to make him jealous, meaning herself, and Robin shows up with a blonde from work instead. Is Lily’s wearing of a leopard print sweater simply a wardrobe choice, or an (unconscious) sign of aggressive sexuality?

Also, it is mildly annoying that the show keeps making Lily enact and project lesbian fantasies while safe and cozy in her heteronormative middle class characterization where we are constantly reminded of her marriage, husband and new baby (and this being the envy of the other main characters). Although these ‘outbursts’ of lesbian fantasy have a subtext of referencing her über lesbian character Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer in a past tv life, here in How I Met Your Mother, her long term heteronormativity is confirmed with flash forwards, situating any queering of her sexuality as temporary experiments and projected as normal expectations and desires of (real life) women who she mirrors.

Ted’s envy in this particular episode about “one day having what you guys have” (Marshall and Lily’s heteronormative full package of marriage and a baby) even though HE JUST BUILT A SKYSCRAPER IN NEW YORK CITY also stuck in my craw.

Please Note: I read Lee Edelman’s “No Future: Queer Theory and the Death Drive” a few weeks ago for one of my classes.
